Kimff Doc Labs Open Call

Kimff is excited to begin taking submissions for documentary projects for our second official year of Kimff Doc Labs - a consultancy established to support filmmakers with producing, editing and story skills.

With support from various donors over the years, Kimff has nurtured emerging Nepali filmmakers by showcasing their works at its annual film festival. And now with the launch of Kimff Doc Labs, we hope to offer much needed producing, editing and story consulting to Nepali filmmakers to not only enhance their work but also to help launch their projects to a wider international audience.

In 2014 and 2015 Kimff guided two opening films Sunakali and Bhagyale Bachekaharu – both of which have gone on to win awards at Kimff and at film festivals around the world. Last year in the inaugural year of Doc Labs, we supported four films: In Search of Devaki, A Song for Barpak, Blockade and The Kidney Action – all winning accolades at Kimff and several other festivals.

The Kimff Doc Labs is open to projects in two categories:

  1. Full length documentaries by Nepali filmmakers which have reached the post-production phase with rough cuts no more than 2 hours in length and have English subtitling and a complete script / transcript in English;
  2. Films that are in the production phase and filmmakers who may not yet have a rough cut but need some guidance to create a rough cut or move their projects forward meaningfully.

Please submit your work in progress as a link or a media file, along with your script in a word document and a brief synopsis for your project.

Once projects are short-listed, we will contact you for an interview before making our final selections. If your project is selected for the Kimff Doc Labs, we will be charging a fee on a sliding scale (between Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 15,000) based on the amount of work that needs to be done. Kimff Doc Labs will accept up to three projects this year. The films will be screened at Kimff 2017 (7-11December).

We will begin accepting applications Saturday June 9, 2017 and close on Monday, July 10, 2017.
