In the Ecuadorian Andes, Chimborazo’s ice pickers live with the harshness of the volcano, where they harvest the ice to provide for their people. Today, the occupation would be near extinction if it were not for Baltazar Ushca, who walks hours every day to the glacier to chip off large blocks of ice to sell in the nearest city. During his journey he remembers his youth and his ice picker friends. On one of these journeys, Candela the llama, his only companion, dies, leaving Baltazar all alone. As the years go by, the city continues to grow and the blazing sun gets closer to the glacier, causing it to melt. Despite the danger, Baltazar tries to rescue the last piece of ice while he watches his hopes melting.
